Mohave Valley, Arizona, 13 April, 2011: Well, it's official! Mark Stahl will kick off the restoration completion of the 1977 Chenowth 1000 by
taking it off the starting line at the 2011 NORRA Mexican 1000 Vintage off road race held in Baja Mexico May 4-8th. The original plan 8 months ago was to get Mark Stahl back in the driver's seat of his old race car but we did not want to offer something until we knew for sure we could make it happen. With the completion of the Chenowth only DAYS away, Jeff and Rory couldn't be happier with the addition of Mark Stahl as co-driver. "It's only right to have Mark behind the wheel of his old ride, he is the reason this car has the history it does in Baja and off road racing" said Rory when asked about the decision.
Mark was just as excited with the news: "I was really excited when I first met Rory (Ward) at Ivan Stewart's auction. I am a big fan of his Racers Only T-Shirts and had never met him before. So imagine my surprise, when I turn around to introduce myself and he tells me he and Jeff (Furrier) had found my old Chenowth 1000 race car and were going to purchase and restore it.
"Rory and I have been talking and emailing each other thru the whole process of restoration. I am amazed at how many original parts they have found and how closely it resembles the car I first raced. Then they said they wanted me to drive the car in the first leg of the 2011 NORRA Mexican 1000. I was totally thrilled and can't wait to get back behind the wheel again."
Also joining the list of drivers will be John Furrier, Jeff's nephew. John has been an integral part of the restoration and has many hours invested in the Baja Winning Chenowth. John grew up in the Arizona desert and is a very capable driver, so adding him to the list of the drivers should help insure the 118 car makes it to La Paz.
